Converting CAD Files to Visio Files

Note: Microsoft’s Visio program is required to complete this process.

1. Locate a .DWG file on your computer.
2. Right click on the file name. A window will appear.
3. Select “Open With > Microsoft Office Visio.”
4. Microsoft Visio will start and the CAD drawing will appear.
5. Right click on the drawing. A window will appear.
6. Select “CAD Drawing Object > Convert.”
7. A window will appear with a list of options. All boxes will appear checked. This indicates that every layer from the original CAD drawing is to be converted.
8. Click “OK.” Note: The process of conversion will take some time depending on your computer’s speed. You should be able to work on other tasks during this time.
9. When conversion is complete, each line and shape in the drawing should be separate from all others. If you select a part of the drawing that appears to be grouped, right click and select “Shape > Ungroup.”
